in Jacksonville

"Each citizen is responsible for loving the children he or she brings into this world - to love them and teach them right rom wrong. The character of our children is the destiny of our country."- President George W. Bush

"CHARACTER COUNTS! in Jacksonville" is a nonpartisan, nonsectarian character development and ethics training organization dedicated to strengthening the character of Jacksonville's youth and adults by teaching core ethical values called the "Six Pillars of Character":  trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.  We are a member of the national "CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition" which is endorsed by the President, both houses of Congress, some 40 states and more than 1,000 communities, counties, school districts, and chambers of commerce.  Through common values and concerted action , the coalition has become the accepted leader in character education throughout the nation.

  • Character education resource for schools
  • Provide Character Development Training workshops for parents, teachers, administrators, schools, and youth-serving organizations
  • Provide Workplace Ethics Training Workshops to businesses and government
  • Recognize citizens of various ages with outstanding character at our annual American Youth Character Awards
  • Pursuing Victory with Honor Sportsmanship Workshops for coaches
  • Conduct an ongoing community-wide public awareness initiative to ensure that the Six Pillars become a way of life in Jacksonville

As you know, each year CHARACTER COUNTS! in Jacksonville honors an individual who has lived by the Golden Rule...someone who stands out for their exemplary character and commitment to community.  Past honorees have included Sheriff John Rutherford, Gateway CEO Gary Powers, and Councilman Kevin Hyde.

We are thrilled to announce that we will be honoring Lois Chepenik at the 2008 Golden Rule Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, March 19, 2008.  Lois is a pillar of character, advocacy, volunteerism and leadership.  Her contributions include (but are in no way limited to) co-founding the Jewish Community Alliance, serving as Executive Director of the Jacksonville Community Council  (1994-2004), co-chair of the 2006 JCCI Murder Study, serving on numerous boards of directors, and on-going support of the non-profit and mentoring community.

It is our duty to honor our community's unsung heroes and we would appreciate your support.  Please join us and support CHARACTER COUNTS! by attending the event and/or sponsoring a table to help honor a woman whose commitment to the community and the golden rule has made a Jacksonville a stronger, safer, more vibrant community.
